Description
A masterful retelling of the Biblical story of David and Bathsheba, this novel brings Ancient Israel to life through the voices of three fascinating women. Their stories are one of love, betrayal, rape, revenge, motherhood, and childlessness, offering a compelling new light on a time-honoured tale. Behind the trappings of power, these women discover a deeply conflicted man - a legendary hero who slew Goliath, founded Jerusalem, and saved Israel, but also a vicious despot who murdered his rivals, massacred his captives, and menaced his harem. This novel centres on the conflict between male ruthlessness and female resistance, which remains strikingly pertinent today. By presenting their voices, these women expose the complexities of life in Ancient Israel, where obedience to fathers and husbands was expected, but also where women sought to resist and find their own destinies.
