Description
The Allotment is a study of allotments, those green sanctuaries where people can grow their own food and connect with nature. First published in 1988, this book looks at British society and history through the lens of allotments, exploring how they reflect the country's relationship with land and community.
Encompassing oral recordings from plot-holders alongside descriptions of regional variations on the plot itself, The Allotment offers a unique perspective on social history, land ownership, and gardening in 21st-century Britain. With a new introduction by Olivia Laing, this book remains relevant today, shedding light on the ways in which allotments continue to shape our lives.
Originally published as a way for ordinary people to reclaim access to land after the Enclosure Acts, allotment-keeping has become a vibrant community of its own. This book invites you to explore the world of allotments and discover their enduring significance.
