Description

Terence's Phormio offers an engaging introduction to the genre of New Comedy through its lively action and exploration of love, deception, and mistaken identity. This play stands out among Terence's works due to the central role of the witty parasite, who drives the plot from behind the scenes. The use of a "double" plot with two young men in love and two contrasting fathers provides ample opportunities for character development and variety. The present edition aims to showcase Terence's skill in plot development and character portrayal, making Phormio one of his most entertaining plays. This edition features the Latin text alongside facing-page translation, introduction, and commentary, providing a comprehensive understanding of the play.
