Description

Archaeological data from the Iron II temple complex at Tel Dan in northern Israel is presented in detail by Andrew R. Davis, who analyzes the remains from the ninth and eighth centuries to understand how the temple functioned as sacred space.

The author correlates this archaeological data with biblical depictions of worship, particularly the "textual strata" of 1 Kings 18 and the book of Amos, arguing that the temple was the site of both "official" and family religion. As a result, worship at the temple became increasingly centralized.

Davis's work sheds new light on Tel Dan's role in helping to reconstruct ancient Israelite religion, especially its distinctive religious traditions of the northern kingdom.
