Description
Tehachapi is an unusual name for an unusual place. It originates from the Southern Paiute description of the convergence of the Mojave Desert and California's southern Central Valley wetlands. In 1876, the Southern Pacific Railroad built its route through the Tehachapi Valley, linking Northern and Southern California rail lines near the communities of Williamsburg and Greenwich. These hamlets were known by local residents as Old Tehachapi and New Tehachapi. The railroad created a new town, Summit Station, which eventually became informally known as Tehachapi after it surpassed both early settlements. Over time, these frontier outposts evolved into the city that anchors southern Kern County, having survived droughts, floods, fires, and a devastating earthquake in 1952. Tehachapi's history is marked by resilience and transformation, reflecting the region's unique geography and the people who have shaped its development.
