Description

Territories are no longer defined by borders or national footprints. Instead, they are enacted through data infrastructures that underpin new forms of governance and shape subjects' everyday lives. This book explores how these territories are both political and visceral, altering the experience of their inhabitants. From subsea cables to server halls, data infrastructures have become geopolitical investments that advance national visions, extend influence, and trigger trade wars. Yet they also challenge sovereignty as a bounded container, enacting a more distributed and decoupled form of governance. The author draws on a wide range of literature to examine these new sociotechnical conditions. Through six chapters, the book stages an interdisciplinary intervention that brings together insights from media studies, migration studies, political theory, and cultural and social studies to understand the complex relationships between power, technology, and territory in contemporary Asia.
