Description

Syria: Neither Bread Nor Freedom by Alan George In 2000, the death of President Hafiz al-Asad led to a brief period of unprecedented freedom in Syria. For six months, Syrians were able to express themselves openly, and political discussion groups flourished. However, this opportunity for reform was short-lived. The book Syria: Neither Bread Nor Freedom recounts the drama of this 'Damascus Spring' and its repression, revealing the inner workings of a system that is demoralized and corrupt. It examines how power is wielded in such a state, and what happens to institutions like political parties, parliament, the media, and universities when they are not functioning as intended. This book provides a unique insight into the legacy of Bashar al-Asad's rule and the challenges facing Syria's transition towards democracy.
