Description

Gerald Bray explores the concept of synods in this thought-provoking essay. Synods are gatherings of church officers that convene to deliberate on church policy and make plans for the future development of the life of the church.

From their early beginnings in Christianity, synods have played a significant role in shaping the governance of churches. While they share some features with ancient traditions, modern synods operate according to fixed constitutions and meet regularly. However, reforming the national synodical structure and developing an effective form of synodical government that is regarded as authoritative by the entire Communion remains a pressing challenge.
