Description
Sylvia Mendez and Aki Munemitsu were two young girls whose lives intersected in a way that changed the country forever. Their family stories, though vastly different, are intertwined with a landmark legal battle that desegregated schools for Latino children. This book tells the remarkable story of Mendez vs. Westminster School District, a true event that paved the way for Brown vs. Topeka Board of Education. The case was sparked by Sylvia's parents' fight to enroll their daughter in a white school, despite being Latino. Aki, meanwhile, faced her own struggles as an Asian American girl sent away from her home and life. The story of these two girls and their families is one of courage, resilience, and the power of standing up for what is right. By exploring this pivotal moment in history, Sylvia & Aki sheds light on a crucial chapter in the fight for equality and justice.
