Description
Stretford's transformation over the last 300 years is a story of dramatic change. From a farming community to an industrialised centre, the town has undergone significant development up to 2002, as illustrated by photographs in this new book. The social life of Stretford is also vividly recorded, with accounts of the Botanical Gardens of 1831, Victorian pageants and exhibitions, and Manchester United's Old Trafford football ground. The authors have delved into the archives of the Trafford Local Studies Centre to create a comprehensive introduction to the town's history. Fascinating photographs of Stretford during WW2 are included, showing war damage and the war work that made the town a target for enemy bombers. This book is an essential read for anyone looking to understand the origins, development and traditions of present-day Stretford.
