St Nicholas Owen was a master craftsman who played a crucial role in the survival of Catholic priests during a time of great persecution. Born in Oxford, he began his career as an apprentice joiner before serving as a servant to Fr Henry Garnet SJ for nearly twenty years. During this period, Owen had many adventures, including narrowly evading capture and assisting in the escape of Jesuit Fr John Gerard from the Tower of London in 1597. He also suffered torture at the Poultry Compter in 1594 but was later released. Despite the dangers, Owen continued to work on behalf of the Catholic community, building priest-holes that would provide safe refuge for fugitives. Owen's remarkable story ends with his own tragic fate: he was finally taken into one of his own priest-holes during a pursuit and died upon the rack in the Tower of London in 1606. This biography offers a detailed look at Owen's life, shedding light on an important chapter in British history.
