Description

St Nicholas Owen: A Life of Secret and Sacrifice During the tumultuous reigns of Elizabeth I and James I, being a Catholic priest in England was a death sentence. To survive, priests had to find a way to hide. One man, Nicholas Owen, played a crucial role in their escape. As a joiner and skilled craftsman, Owen built hidden priest-holes, saving countless lives. Born in Oxford, Owen's early life was marked by a strong sense of faith and a desire to serve. He was apprenticed to a local joiner in 1577 and later worked as a servant to a prominent Catholic priest. Owen's bravery and cunning helped him evade capture and assist in the escape of a fellow Jesuit, Fr John Gerard, from the Tower of London in 1597. Despite his bravery, Owen's life was marked by hardship and persecution. He was tortured in 1594 but later released, and eventually died in the Tower of London in 1606, after being taken in one of his own secret hiding places. This is the first detailed biography of Owen, shedding new light on the life of a man who risked everything to protect his faith.
