Description
Chilcott's powerful setting of the Gospel of St John is a dramatic yet optimistic retelling of the Passiontide story. The work features SATB and soloists, with organ or small ensemble accompaniment.
The narrative is driven by the tenor soloist, who provides a melodious account of the events in an arioso style. Solo baritones perform the roles of Jesus and Pilate, while the SATB chorus comments on the story in short outbursts as a crowd or group of soldiers.
The work includes four meditations and five hymns that support the narrative, set to new original melodies intended for performance by an audience or congregation. Chilcott has selected English poems from the 13th to the early 17th centuries to accompany these meditations.
