Spirited women

Spirited Women: Gender, Religion, and Cultural Identity in the Nepal Himalaya by Joanne C. Watkins explores the lives of women in a small cultural group in Nepal, highlighting their agency and importance within their community. In this anthropological study, Watkins examines how these women navigate their peaceful Buddhist tradition with the demands of the free market economy. The book delves into the experiences of individual men and women, both in rural Nepal and urban centers where some have settled. Supplemented with photographs and regional maps, Spirited Women adds a valuable chapter to the ethnographic record of Nepal, shedding light on the complex relationships between gender, religion, and cultural identity in this fascinating region. Through its far-reaching exploration, Watkins challenges common assumptions about women's roles in capitalist societies, revealing a marked divergence from expected patterns. This insightful study is an important contribution to our understanding of women's lives and experiences in the Nepal Himalaya.
