The landscaping practices of the 18th century were deeply entwined with the construction of imperial power. This book examines how the design and management of gardens, plantations, and estates contributed to the shaping of imperial identity and the regulation of national, sexual, and gender identities. From the ornate gardens of European estates to the sugar plantations of the West Indies, Jill H. Casid explores how the circulation of plants and hybridity influenced agriculture and landscaping on European soil, and how colonial contacts materially shaped what we take as "European". The book also considers the ways in which imperial landscaping contained within it the seeds of resistance, such as in the form of slave gardens and Afro-Caribbean practices like vodou. Through a wide range of visual and written sources, including maps, literature, and travel writing, Casid reveals the colonial landscape as a complex system that defined and remade the "heartlands" of nations, as well as the contact zones and colonial peripheries.
