Songbook by Alec Soth is a poignant collection of photographs that capture the longing for human connection in America. In 2012-2014, photographer Alec Soth embarked on a journey across the country, attending hundreds of meetings, dances, festivals and communal gatherings to find people who were not hiding behind virtual social networks. He worked on his self-published newspaper, The LBM Dispatch, as well as for major publications like the New York Times. The resulting photographs are fragmentary, funny and sad, revealing a tension between American individualism and the desire to be united. Soth has stripped these pictures of their news context to highlight the root of this longing.
