Description
Sofonisba Anguissola was an Italian Renaissance painter born in Cremona to a noble family. She established an international reputation during her lifetime, becoming one of Europe's first female artists to achieve this status. This book explores the evolution of Sofonisba Anguissola's art from her training in Cremona through her service at the Spanish court, where she secured her reputation as a painter of international renown. The volume examines the social, political and cultural preconditions surrounding her role and status at the Spanish court, including her connections with noble courts in Spain and Italy. Recent discoveries made by the author, combined with archival documentation, offer new insights into Anguissola's life and artistic practice.
