Description

So Distant from My Life by Monique Ilboudo is a powerful and thought-provoking novel that explores the complexities of migration and its impact on individuals and communities.

The story follows Jeanphi, a young man from Ouabany who becomes obsessed with migrating to another country in search of a better life. His journey takes him across the Sahara Desert and into Morocco, where he meets an elegant French widower who is struggling to overcome bureaucratic hurdles in his charitable endeavour.

This compelling novel offers a sharp critique of the NGO-isation of African countries and the currents of shame that divide communities and families. Yarri Kamara's translation brings Ilboudo's text to life with its sharp humour, lucid descriptions and urgency, making for a gripping and unforgettable read.
