Description

Francisco X. Alarcón's collection Snake Poems: An Aztec Invocation is a poetic quest to reclaim his Indigenous heritage. Originally published in 1992, this book propelled Alarcón to the forefront of contemporary Chicano letters. The poems are based on Nahuatl invocations and spells that have survived over three centuries. This special edition includes renditions of the 104 poems in Nahuatl, Spanish, and English, offering a unique glimpse into the lost teachings of Alarcón's ancestors. A tribute to Alarcón, who passed away in 2016, this book features remembrances from fellow writers and activists, including Juan Felipe Herrera and Odilia Galván Rodríguez.
