Description

In this powerful and unflinching novel, Gabriela Cabezón Cámara brings to life the story of Cleopatra, a transvestite who transforms her shantytown into a tiny utopia after receiving divine messages from the Virgin Mary. With its densely-packed prose and fast-paced narrative, Slum Virgin is a gripping tale that weaves together everyday speech, slang, and classical references. As ambitious journalist Quity delves deeper into Cleo's story, she finds herself seduced by the captivating subject of her article, leading to a life-changing experience. The author masterfully balances tragedy and comedy, refusing to shy away from the harsh realities faced by the poor and downtrodden. With its unique blend of humor, drama, and social commentary, Slum Virgin is a compelling read that pulls the reader in immediately.
