Description
Sleeping by the Mississippi is a seminal work in the photobook era. First published in 2004, it established Alec Soth as a leading figure in contemporary photographic practice. This edition, published by MACK, features two new photographs not included in previous versions. The book captures America's 'third coast' through large-format colour photographs of individuals, landscapes, and interiors. The series presents an eclectic mix of subjects, evoking a mood of loneliness, longing, and reverie. Soth's work combines documentary style with poetic sensibility, creating a sense of wanderlust that is quintessentially American. The Mississippi River serves as the organising structure for the book, rather than its subject. This nuanced view has acquired significance over time, revealing a complex interplay of hope, fear, desire, and regret in the journey along this mythic river.
