Description
Italo Calvino's Six Memos for the Next Millennium is a profound reflection on what makes great literature. Completed just before his death, these six lectures outline the qualities in writing that Calvino believed would define literature in the century to come. Calvino explores five key concepts: lightness, quickness, exactitude, visibility, and multiplicity. Drawing on his vast knowledge of myth, folklore, and works from ancient to modern times, he provides insightful examples that shed new light on these essential elements of writing. This book is not only a stirring defense of literature but also an indispensable guide to Calvino's own work. Readers will find the prescience of these lectures astonishing, as they have proven remarkably relevant in the years since their completion.
