Description

Aristotle's classification of the world into ten categories has been the subject of debate for centuries. In this part of his commentary, Simplicius records the controversy surrounding the six categories that Plotinus rejected: acting, being acted upon, being in a position, when, where, and having on. The dispute between Plotinus and Porphyry, Aristotle's pupil and editor, reveals the profound difficulties in Aristotle's categorical scheme. While Porphyry defended all six categories as applicable to the physical world, his pupil Lamblichus went further, arguing that they also apply to the world of Forms, albeit with a Pythagorean reinterpretation. This commentary provides valuable insight into the complexities of Aristotle's thought and the enduring challenges it poses for philosophers today.
