This study explores the repertoire of the marionette theater, analyzing the genres that underpin its performances. The puppeteers' use of epic, farce, saints' lives, bandits' lives, fairytales, Christian myth, and city legend serves to comment on and critique the relationships between Sicily's major social classes. At the heart of this repertoire is the Carolingian Cycle, particularly a contemporary version of The Song of Roland known as The Death of the Paladins. This text illustrates how the heroes of the Carolingian legends are reinterpreted in Sicilian performances to provide a rhetorical function: articulating and disseminating the tools of Sicilian identity.
