Description
Alice Childress's Selected Plays offers a unique insight into the American drama of the 1940s to 1960s. This collection brings together the plays that Childress herself believed were her best, providing a realistic portrayal of racial inequalities and social injustices during this period.
Childress's work is characterized by strong-willed female protagonists whose struggles highlight the restrictions faced by African American women. As one of the first African American women to have a play professionally produced in New York City, Childress's plays offer a significant contribution to the American theater.
This volume marks an important milestone in the study of Childress's work, making it a valuable resource for scholars and enthusiasts alike.
