Description
The seaside town of Margate in Kent has a rich history dating back to its development as a seaside resort in the Georgian era. Its sandy beaches became popular with Londoners, particularly after the advent of steam packets in 1815 and the arrival of railways later in the nineteenth century. This book explores the lesser-known episodes and characters of Margate's past, from the foundation of the world's first sea-bathing hospital to the creation of Dreamland. The town has been a haven for artists, writers, and actors, and boasts an intriguing history that includes the most haunted theatre in the country and the first modern bungalow. With its unique blend of history and hidden stories, Secret Margate offers a fascinating insight into this Kentish town's past, making it an appealing read for anyone interested in local history.
