Description
Secret Bristol reveals the hidden truths behind this historic city. From prehistory to the present day, it uncovers the inhuman aspects of early trade, slavery, piracy and social justice struggles, as well as the cruelties inflicted in institutions. The book explores how Bristol's medieval heart was largely destroyed in the Blitz and forgotten by the government, and how its contribution to aircraft and automobile design was overshadowed. The city's complex history is also marked by instances of racism and conflict, including the 'Whites Only' employment policy on buses in the early 1960s. The book takes us up to Bristol today, shedding light on a city that has struggled with its past. With memorable photographs throughout, Secret Bristol offers a fascinating and thought-provoking journey through the city's often-horrific history. Through its pages, this book provides a unique perspective on Bristol's development and the people who have shaped it.
