The islands were bought for £1,400, a price that seems remarkably low considering their natural beauty. The purchase was made through Colonel Kenneth Macdonald, who offered the islands for sale. The islands were described as being set in a dangerous sea, with no more than a stone-built bothy as accommodation, five miles or so off the coast of Lewis.
