Description
Samuel Johnson & the Journey Into Words by Lynda Mugglestone offers a fresh perspective on the life and work of this influential lexicographer. This book reassesses Johnson's approach to dictionary-making, exploring his complex thinking about language, control, obedience, justice, and power. Johnson's writings reveal a nuanced understanding of language change, loan words, spelling, history, and authority, as well as his evolving ideas on the nature, purpose, and methods of lexicography. The book delves into Johnson's commitment to evidence and its applications, shedding light on the challenges he faced in creating a comprehensive dictionary. By examining Johnson's metaphors and their implications for dictionary-making, this volume invites readers to reconsider the processes involved in compiling a dictionary and the goals that might be achieved through such endeavours.
