Samuel Butler's life was marked by turmoil and transformation. Born in 1835 at his family's Nottinghamshire rectory, he faced a childhood marred by conflict with his parents, which shaped his early education and aspirations. Butler's journey towards self-discovery took him to Cambridge University, where he earned a first-class degree in Classics in 1858. However, it was during his time living in a London parish that he began to question the morality of those around him, leading him to reevaluate his faith. This period of introspection ultimately prompted him to emigrate to New Zealand in 1859, where he would later write about his experiences as a sheep farmer. The seeds of Butler's most famous work, Erewhon, were sown during these formative years, and it was published in 1872 to establish him as a notable figure.
