Description
St Bruno, the Carthusian, is a biography of the 11th-century Christian saint who founded the Carthusian Order. Born in Cologne around 1030, Bruno studied at the university in Rheims and later taught there before becoming Rector of Studies for nearly twenty years.
In 1080, he was chosen as Archbishop, but instead of returning to Rome, Bruno chose a life of solitude in the desert, building an oratory with individual cells where he lived in poverty and devoted himself to prayer and study. This period of isolation lasted six years before Pope Urban II summoned him back to Rome to help with Church reform.
Bruno eventually established his hermitage in Calabria, but died there in 1101. His letters, written during this time, have inspired Carthusians for centuries and remain a testament to his spiritual devotion.
