Description

This anthology brings together writings on translation from Russia's literary past to the present day. From the mid-18th century until today, Russian writers have engaged in serious and sustained literary translation, viewing it as an integral part of their oeuvre and Russian literature as a whole.

The selected texts offer valuable insights into the theory and practice of translation in Russia, revealing a sophisticated exploration of national identity and the modern subject. Many of these texts are translated into English for the first time, accompanied by extensive annotation and biographical sketches of the authors.

This collection fills a gap in the literature on alternative translation traditions, highlighting the vibrant culture of translation on Europe's periphery. Viewed in a broad cultural context, the selected texts reflect a nuanced understanding of Russia's response to world literature and its attempts to promote itself as an all-inclusive cultural model.
