Running a Thousand Miles for Freedom is the remarkable true story of Ellen Craft and her husband William's daring escape from slavery in 19th-century America.
In 1826, Ellen was born into slavery in Georgia, where she was forced to conceal her mixed-race heritage. Her life changed forever when she met William at 16, who was sold by his owner to settle a debt. The couple married and planned their escape, seeking freedom for themselves and a family of their own.
With bravery and determination, they posed as a white planter and her servant, respectively, and traveled openly by train and steamboat to Philadelphia in 1848. Their bold escape was widely publicized, but the Crafts soon faced new challenges when the Fugitive Slave Act was passed in 1850. They fled to England, where they built a new life and had five children.
