The Royal Hampshire Regiment 1914-1918 is a detailed history of the regiment's service during World War I. Seventeen battalions of the Hampshires served overseas, with significant action in France and Flanders, Gallipoli, Macedonia, Mesopotamia, Egypt, Palestine, India, Aden, Persia, and Russia. The regiment suffered significant losses, with 82 Battle Honours awarded and three Victoria Crosses. However, the historian's task was complicated by the passage of time, as over thirty years had elapsed since the war, making it difficult to gather personal memories and anecdotal accounts from surviving veterans. Additionally, important documents such as the Part II Daily Orders were lost in a World War II blitz. Despite these challenges, the author has compiled a solid history that is well-supported by maps and sketches, drawing on battalion war diaries and other primary sources.
