Rose Daughter by Robin McKinley presents a beautiful retelling of Beauty and the Beast. After their father's business fails, Beauty and her sisters leave behind their comfortable life to move to a small cottage in the countryside.

The neglected cottage is overgrown with long, thorny stems of an unknown plant. Beauty tends to them patiently, and when they bloom the following summer, she discovers that roses are not just beautiful but also require love to flourish. An old woman shares a folk-tale that explains why there aren't many roses around anymore.

When Beauty takes her father's place in the Beast's palace, she finds his beloved rose garden dying. Determined to bring it back to life, she uses her love for roses and her pity for the Beast to restore the garden, distracting herself from missing her family and finding a new purpose.
