Description

Romy Schneider: A Star Across Europe by Marion Hallett explores the enduring legacy of Austria's most beloved film star. Born in 1938, Romy Schneider rose to international fame with her iconic portrayal of Empress Elisabeth of Austria in the Sissi trilogy. This book delves into Schneider's remarkable career, tracing her impact on European cinema and celebrity culture from the 1950s to the 1980s. Schneider's star image played a significant role in shaping cultural and ideological representations of femininity on screen. Hallett examines how Schneider's representation of women supported shifting social agendas regarding femininity during this period. By analysing Schneider's career, Hallett sheds new light on key questions of trans-European and transnational stardom. This book offers a valuable insight into the significance of Schneider's image within Western European film culture and celebrity culture, both during her active career and in the years following her passing in 1982.
