Description
Roelant Savery's Wondrous World by Ariane van Suchtelen is a fascinating exploration of the life and art of this Flemish artist. In the early 17th century, Savery arrived in the Northern Netherlands, where he was part of a thriving artistic community that would produce some of the most remarkable works of the era. Savery's versatility as an artist is evident in his diverse range of subjects, from landscapes to animal scenes and flower still lifes. His meticulous attention to detail allowed him to depict countless species with encyclopaedic precision, including people from various regions and cultures. One of his most famous works is the extinct dodo from Mauritius, a testament to his skill as an artist. This book offers a unique insight into Savery's life and art, shedding light on his experiences working for the Habsburg emperor Rudolf II in Prague and his later years in Utrecht, where he created a garden that inspired many of his still lifes.
