Robert Heinecken: Object Matter explores four decades of innovative practice by a pioneer of postwar Los Angeles art. From the early 1960s to the late 1990s, Heinecken recontextualized images through collage and assemblage, double-sided photograms, photolithography, and re-photography. Heinecken's work questions the nature of photography, radically redefining its perception as an artistic medium. This comprehensive survey sets his practice in the context of twentieth-century history of photographic experimentation and conceptual art. An illustrated essay provides insight into Heinecken's experimental techniques, shedding light on a relatively sparse area of scholarship. Born in 1931, Robert Heinecken was born in Denver, Colorado, before relocating to California with his family. He went on to earn degrees from the University of California, Los Angeles, and founded the graduate program for photography at UCLA in 1964, where he taught until 1991.
