Description
The memory of war in America is complex and multifaceted. G. Kurt Piehler explores how Americans have debated the way wars should be remembered since the Revolution, with varying degrees of success. Piehler examines the efforts to commemorate conflicts through monuments, holidays, veterans' organizations, and national cemeteries, revealing a history marked by competition between different groups vying for recognition. He argues that this ongoing reinterpretation of war is deeply tied to the evolving definition of national identity in America. This book sheds light on the often-overlooked stories behind the battles over memorials, demonstrating that the struggle to remember and honor those who have served is a persistent theme throughout American history.
