Description
The American constitutional experiment was shaped by nearly two centuries of colonial experience and nearly two millennia of European history and thought. The principles of religious freedom outlined in the First Amendment drew upon a rich legacy of historical examples, including the Christian Bible, which was widely quoted and referenced during the founding era. Biblical passages such as "For freedom, Christ has set us free" and "You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free" were particularly influential in shaping American attitudes towards religious liberty. These ideas were also reflected in calls to Christians to remain separate from worldly temptations and to render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's and to God the things that are God's. The Bible's "wall of separation" concept, as used by St Paul, was later adopted in law and politics, inspiring impassioned sermons and political literature during the 1770s and 1780s.
