Description
Releasing the Porcelain Birds is a powerful and deeply personal collection of poetry by Carmen Bugan. Based on her family's extraordinary history during the Cold War, this book explores themes of identity, displacement, and the transformative power of writing.
The poet's journey began in 1989, when five members of the Bugan family were allowed to leave Romania with just one suitcase each, pursued by death threats. Years later, Carmen Bugan uncovered a vast cache of secret files on her father, mother, sister, brother, and herself, which she has woven into a single, continuous poem.
This remarkable work is not only a testament to the poet's courage and resilience but also a celebration of the liberating potential of poetry. With its tender narrative voice and exuberant language, Releasing the Porcelain Birds faces down dispossession and reaches towards freedom.
