Raqib Shaw: Reinventing the Old Masters is the first full-length biographical study of this extraordinary artist. Born in Calcutta in 1974 and raised in Kashmir, Shaw's life has been shaped by his experiences as an Indian immigrant to London. His paintings are infused with memories and longing for his homeland, drawing on a diverse range of influences including Indian miniatures, Persian carpets, and the Pre-Raphaelites. Shaw's unique technique involves months of preparatory work, using needle-fine syringes and a porcupine quill to apply enamel paint. The result is intricate, magical, and breathtaking in its color and complexity. This book accompanies an exhibition of eight paintings by Shaw at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, alongside two works that have long fascinated him: Sir Joseph Noel Paton's The Quarrel of Oberon and Titania, 1849, and Lucas Cranach's An Allegory of Melancholy, 1528.
