Description
Rain Over Baghdad by Hāla al-Badrī is a gripping historical mystery that delves into the complexities of Iraq in the mid-seventies to late eighties. Against the backdrop of Saddam Hussein's rise to power and the country's tumultuous politics, an Egyptian woman living in Baghdad becomes embroiled in a personal mystery involving a communist journalist from the marshes. As she navigates her own life and the intrigue surrounding her colleague, the narrator gains insight into the lives of those around her, including workers, peasants, and Arab talent who have flocked to the country. This is a story about Iraq as it was, in all its vibrancy and complexity, before the events that would shape its future. Through the eyes of an ordinary woman, Rain Over Baghdad offers a unique perspective on a pivotal moment in Middle Eastern history, one that is both deeply personal and universally relatable.
