Description
The development of strategic air assault as a means to strike at an adversary's industrial and military base dates back to the early 20th century. However, it wasn't until the creation of Bomber Command in 1936 that this concept was put into practice. The initial years of World War II left Bomber Command severely weakened, with inadequate navigation systems and high casualty rates inflicted by enemy defenses. It wasn't until the appointment of Sir Arthur Harris as Commander-in-Chief that the Command's fortunes began to change. The introduction of more efficient bomber designs, such as the Lancaster and Halifax, and electronic aids like 'Gee', 'Oboe' and 'H2'S', greatly increased the effectiveness of the Command's operations. By 1944/45, the Third Reich's industrial base was largely neutralized. This book provides a detailed account of Bomber Command's development and its role in the Allied victory during World War II.
