Description

The XVIth century saw a significant shift in the role of clergy societies within Christianity. This change was largely driven by the Protestant Reformation and its emphasis on individual faith over communal worship. As a result, the concept of universal priesthood was gradually abandoned in favour of a more limited clergy. Despite these changes, reciprocal influences between Catholic and Protestant clergy persisted, particularly at the borders where their territories met. These areas served as important hubs for exchange and understanding, allowing clergy to engage with one another on a regular basis. This book explores the complex relationships between clergy through various case studies, examining their training, organisation, interactions, and social identities. By studying these diverse practices, including preaching, conferences, and controversies, we gain insight into the ongoing process of defining clerical identities. These identities were often shaped by opposition to one another, yet also developed on common foundations.
