Powers of Darkness: The Lost Version of Dracula is a previously unknown literary discovery, shedding new light on Bram Stoker's iconic vampire novel. In 1901, Icelandic publisher Valdimar Ásmundsson published Makt Myrkranna, an Icelandic edition of Dracula, which included an original preface written by Stoker himself. For over 80 years, this edition remained unknown outside of Iceland until its rediscovery in 1986.
Further research by Hans de Roos revealed that Ásmundsson had not only translated Dracula but also penned an entirely new version of the story, with new characters and a reworked plot. This new narrative is shorter, punchier, and more erotic than Stoker's original, making it a fresh take on the story.
Powers of Darkness presents the first-ever translation into English of Stoker and Ásmundsson's Makt Myrkranna, accompanied by marginal annotations by de Roos and forewords by Dacre Stoker and John Edgar Browning. This unique edition offers a fascinating glimpse into the history of Dracula and its enduring influence on Gothic literature and vampire fiction.
