This theory posits that anxiety, psychoneurosis, and psychosis are symptoms of disintegration, which is characterized by involution, psychopathology, and retrogression to a lower level of psychic functioning. In contrast, integration represents evolution, psychic health, and adequate adaptation, both within the self and to the environment.

Dabrowski also proposes that personality development occurs through a developmental instinct, where individuals tend to evolve from lower to higher levels of personality. This process involves a period of disintegration, followed by secondary integration at a higher level.
