Description

The story of the women's orchestra in Auschwitz is one of survival and sacrifice. In 1940s Poland, Fania Fénelon, a Parisian singer, finds herself arrested by the Nazis and sent to Auschwitz. There, she joins an all-female orchestra formed for the entertainment of the camp commandants, with its members' lives hanging in the balance. As long as the orchestra continues to find favour, its members are spared from the gas chambers. However, Fania struggles with the corruption of her music and the erosion of the morals of those around her. The orchestra's existence is a delicate balancing act, with its very survival dependent on its ability to entertain. This stageplay, adapted from the 1980 CBS television film written by Arthur Miller, tells the true story of Fania Fénelon's experiences in Auschwitz.
