Description
Plato's Counterfeit Sophists by Håkan Tell offers a fresh perspective on the Greek wisdom tradition. By examining the sophists within their historical context, this book reveals significant intellectual overlap between them and their predecessors. The author argues that the sophists' exclusion from serious intellectual traditions is largely due to Plato's condemnation of them. This revised history challenges modern scholarship's perception of the sophists as inferior to other philosophers like the Presocratics, Platonists, and Aristotelians. By exploring this continuity, Tell sheds new light on the potential courses Greek philosophy might have taken if not for Plato's influence.
