Description
Plato's philosophical works are remarkably little known, despite his profound influence on Western thinking. Born into a family of high social status, Plato's education would have been rich and varied, drawing on the teachings of prominent philosophers such as Cratylus and Pythagoras, as well as Parmenides. A pivotal moment in Plato's life was his encounter with Socrates, whose methods of debate left a lasting impression. This encounter, combined with the ongoing rivalry between Athens and Sparta, which culminated in the Peloponnesian War, shaped Plato's life and career. He served in the Athenian cause and later traveled extensively throughout the Mediterranean, studying various subjects and beginning his writings. Upon his return to Athens, Plato established the Academy, a school of learning that offered a comprehensive curriculum in subjects such as astronomy, biology, mathematics, and philosophy. This undertaking marked the beginning of his writing career, with many of his works surviving to this day.
